What Creates Snoring?
When it comes to snoring, the actual sound that you hear is created by vibrations being made by the air flowing through your nasal passage or airway. The air is being obstructed by something, whether it is your soft palate, or some other congestion. Among them is the position of your diaphragm when your head is on your pillow. By folding, it creates that obstruction that leads to the vibrations which turns into the sound of snoring. When it comes to the actual decibel level of the snoring, it all depends on the amount of air being pushed through the obstructed airway. The more air being pushed through, the louder the noise will be.
Another reason why you are more likely to snore when on your back is because of your tongue. When you sleep, your tongue becomes relaxed and falls back. Because of gravity, when you are on your back, it will fall to the back of your mouth and become an obstruction. When you are on your side or stomach, your tongue will still become relaxed and fall, but it won’t be blocking your airway.

Alcohol, Medication and Tobacco

If you want to drink alcohol, you should not do it within four hours of going to sleep. Alcohol, prescription medication and tobacco weaken your throat muscles and make it easy for obstructions to occur. Aside from your throat muscles becoming weakened, the muscles in your neck, tongue and pharynx relax more as well, all of which lead to snoring. When it comes to tobacco, the longer you expose your body to cigarettes and cigars, the more difficult it will be for your throat to gain strength back.
Nasal blockages are another major reason why snoring can occur. These blockages can be anything from a hereditary matter to mucus buildup. Depending on what your blockage is, there are ways to treat it. If it is something hereditary, you may be able to have surgery to remove the blockage. This isn’t 100 percent effective and it isn’t uncommon to be forced to undergo several surgeries over time to continually correct the situation. If your blockage is just mucus, one way to combat this would be to take a hot shower before bed. This steam and heat of the shower will weaken the built up mucus in your sinus, allowing it to fall. You should also blow your nose immediately before bed to get any build up out. Another option would be to use a nasal spray that has steroids in it. The steroids work at shrinking the blockage and this will allow you to breathe easy at night.
